What is shogi (shogi)?
Shogi (pronounced sho-gee) is a 2-player game of strategy that is commonly referred to as “Japanese chess.” Although Shogi is very similar to chess, you’ll notice a few differences. To play, begin by arranging the board with your pieces on one side and your opponent’s on the other.
What are the similarities between shogi and chess?
The similarites between Chess and Shogi suggest a common origin, and it is commonly held that their common origin was a game called Chaturanga, which arose in India in approximately the 7th century AD. From there Chaturanga migrated westward, eastward and northward, mutating along the way.
Can you play shogi with figurine pieces?
Trying to play Shogi with figurine pieces would be impractical. Shogi begins in the position shown below in either of the two diagrams. From left to right, each player’s first rank has a Lance, a Knight, a Silver General, a Gold General, a King, a Gold General, a Silver General, a Knight, and a Lance.
Can a shogi piece move across the board?
Most shogi pieces can move only to an adjacent square. A few may move across the board, and one jumps over intervening pieces. The lance, bishop, and rook are ranging pieces: They can move any number of squares along a straight line limited only by intervening pieces and the edge of the board.
How do you play shogi 2 player?
To play the 2-player strategy game Shogi, start by placing your Shogi board on a table, so you and your opponent are on opposite sides. Arrange your pieces onto the board so the characters are facing your opponent and the black side of each piece is facing up.
Does the King have promoted moves in shogi?
The King does not have promoted moves. Tip: Like with Western chess, the goal of Shogi is to checkmate (in Japanese “Tsumi”) your opponent’s King. That means you want to protect your King at all times. If your King is in “check,” you need to try to move it to safety.
