Do chinchillas poop a lot?
Chinchillas do poop an awful lot. But whereas this is a major issue with other pets, it’s not a major issue, since a chinchilla’s poop is so hard, dry and small. If it’s healthy, your chinchilla should be pooping hundreds of times per day—and no, that’s not an exaggeration.
What does diarrhea look like in chinchillas?
Diarrhea looks much different than a healthy poop and will be soft, sticky and may even have a layer of mucus on it. This is also the only time that a chinchilla poop should smell. If you notice your chinchilla’s poop is runny or smelly make sure to call the vet immediately.

How often should I Change my Chinchilla’s bedding?
First, they are extremely easy to clean compared to swapping out bedding or shavings every 3 to 4 days. They are also safe for your chinchilla and so far into using them, I like how easy they are to shop vacuum that poop right off the fleece. It only takes a few minutes each day to keep your chinchilla cage clean using this method.
Why does my Chinchilla have diarrhea?
Chinchillas can contract microscopic parasites such as Giardia from water or other animals’ feces. Diarrhea is the symptom of this and veterinarians can identify it by performing a stool sample analysis. Think about the first time you jumped out of a plane, found out you were in major trouble or had crippling anxiety over a test.
How do chinchillas digest their food?
Chinchillas, specifically, use what is known as “hindgut fermentation,” in which food passes through the stomach and small intestine then into the Cecum, which is where beneficial bacteria reside which ferment plant matter and break down cellulose.
