Werkstress, overspanning en burn-out klachten kunnen geleidelijk in elkaar overgaan. Afhankelijk van de ontstaansgeschiedenis, de ernst en duur kan er tevens sprake zijn van een psychische stoornis. Veelal gaat het dan om een zogenaamde somatoforme stoornis of een stemmingsstoornis.
