Hoe zijn de continenten ontstaan?
Zo’n 200 miljoen jaar geleden komt dat continent in beweging. Er ontstaan breuklijnen en scheuren, waardoor de verschillende landmassa’s langzaam uit elkaar drijven. Laurazië en Gondwana ontstaan: twee continenten die de basis vormen voor het huidige noordelijk (Laurazië) en het zuidelijk halfrond (Gondwana).
Hoe is Pangea ontstaan?
Over het algemeen gaat men er echter van uit dat Pangea 250 miljoen jaar geleden ontstond. Verschillende landmassa’s botsten toen op elkaar en vormden zo één reusachtig continent. De naam Pangea komt uit het Grieks (pan ‘geheel’ en gea ‘aarde’). Om het continent heen bevond zich één superoceaan: Panthalassa.
Welke werelddelen grensden vroeger aan elkaar?
Bij een botsing van continenten, dus van landmassa’s, wordt het land omhooggeduwd. Zo ontstaan gebergtes als de Himalaya en de Alpen. De verschuivingen gaan langzaam, maar in de loop van miljoenen jaren komt het neer op duizenden kilometers. Zo grensden India, Australië en Antarctica ooit aan elkaar.

According to plate tectonic evidence, Gondwana was assembled by continental collisions in the Late Precambrian (about 1 billion to 542 million years ago). Gondwana then collided with North America, Europe, and Siberia to form the supercontinent of Pangea.
What was before Pangea?
But before Pangaea, Earth’s landmasses ripped apart and smashed back together to form supercontinents repeatedly. Each supercontinent has its quirks, but one, called Rodinia, assembled from 1.3 to 0.9 billion years ago and broken up about 0.75 billion years ago, is particularly odd.

The supercontinent began to break apart about 200 million years ago, during the Early Jurassic Epoch (201 million to 174 million years ago), eventually forming the modern continents and the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

The opening and closing of an ocean basin is called a Wilson Cycle. It begins when hot material rising from the mantle stretches the overlying crust. As molten material rises, a rift is formed. The upwelling of hot material will continue to rise through that thinner area of crust, pushing the plates apart.
