Is Android open source?
Android is an open source operating system for mobile devices and a corresponding open source project led by Google. As an open source project, Android’s goal is to avoid any central point of failure in which one industry player can restrict or control the innovations of any other player.

Why was Android made open source?
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) was created to make sure there would always be a open source platform available to innovate the app market. As they have stated “the most important goal is to make sure that Android Software is implemented as widely and compatible as possible, for everyone’s benefit”.
Are Android and iOS open source?
Google’s Android is considered an Open Source mobile OS, while Apple’s iOS is considered closed source and each has its own benefits and issues. By having an Open Source software program, you allow developers to alter large amounts of the code to their own preference.

Is HarmonyOS Android only?
While HarmonyOS’ official marketing and development paperwork appear to be intentionally written to obfuscate the fact this it is essentially a forked version of Android, it does appear to be based on Google’s mobile OS, so to say that it is replacing Android on the company’s smartphones isn’t exactly correct.
