Expansion packs were levelling off, and not attracing people to new starter packs. So the money wasn’t coming in. The game and the vehicle/gadget assembly was a bit too hard for some of the demographic it was aimed at. Seven year old kids lose tiny, sometimes essential lego bits.

Can you play Lego dimensions without the toy pad?
The long answer is yes, technically you can. What you need from the minifigs are the disks inside them, not necessarily the actual LEGOs. The disks with the RFID chip inside are what actually allow you to use them to play the game, not the LEGO figures.

Can you use any minifigure for LEGO Dimensions?
Only the initial game you buy is unique to one console, from there on out you can buy add-ons that are compatible with all. Essentially it’s a unique experience within the Lego universe, and the characters you play as within it are actual Lego minifigures that you construct and then beam into the game via the portal.
