In de organisatiecultuur kan dat gedrag tot een basisveronderstelling uitgroeien: onze discipline is de basis voor succes. Schein betoogt dat de basisveronderstellingen de essentie zijn van een cultuur. Cultuur is dus veel meer dan wat er in de kernwaarden, missie en visie staat beschreven.
