De Romeinse keizer Theodosius I (347-395), ook wel Theodosius de Grote genoemd. Theodosius I (‘de Grote’) nam in 391 een belangrijke beslissing. Hij verhief het christendom tot nieuwe staatsgodsdienst en verklaarde alle tempels van de oude Romeinse religie tot verboden gebied.
