Hoornlaag (Stratum Corneum): De buitenste laag van de opperhuid met gemiddeld ongeveer twintig onderlagen van platte, dode cellen afhankelijk van de plaats op het lichaam van de huid. Deze dode cellen worden regelmatig afgestoten in een proces dat desquamatie (afschilfering) heet.

Generally, the stratum corneum is made up of 15-20 dead cell layers with a thickness of 10-40 micrometer. The stratum corneum is permanent in reptiles and is only replaced during the phase of rapid growth called molting or ecdysis. Beta-keratin is also present and provides rigidity to the skin layer.
What are the signs and symptoms of stratum corneum disease?
Other concerning signs include parakeratosis, which describes a corneocyte that has retained its nucleus. Clinically, skin scaling usually characterizes diseases of the stratum corneum. Normally, the stratum corneum is relatively dry, which makes the surface unsuitable for the growth of many microorganisms.
How many corneocytes does the stratum corneum shed per day?
A healthy stratum corneum will shed approximately one layer of corneocytes each day. The corneocytes will then be replaced with new keratinocytes from a lower layer of the epidermis called the stratum granulosum.
