What exactly is the Underdark?
The Underdark is “a vast subterranean realm inhabited by drow, mind flayers, aboleth, and other strange, sinister creatures. It is a place where few humans go and from where even fewer return”.
How deep is the Underdark in DND?
At least 26 miles deep, with rumoured unexplored caverns 40 miles deep, though most of the known Underdark is within 10 miles of the surface. According to the D&D 3e sourcebook Underdark, p.120, the lowest level of the Underdark starts at a depth of ten miles and continues down from there:
Is it safe to swim in the Underdark?
You might want to avoid the water altogether anyways, but swimming in The Underdark is not advised. Individually most dark elves (or drow) are not an overwhelming threat, but they are long-lived, and, unlike surface elves, there is very little they won’t do to achieve power.
What is the most feared creature in the Underdark?
The most feared is the central eye that negates all magic it gazes upon. The prince of demons isn’t exactly part of The Underdark’s natural ecology, but he is still the biggest, baddest, most evil creature ever to show up there.
In Faerun basically the canon setting for D&D 5e The Underdark is described as was the vast network of underground caverns and tunnels underneath the surface of Abeir-Toril. It was home to a host of evil beings driven deep into the caverns at the end of the age of demons. I keep seeing “The Underdark was …”.
Can you travel from one place to another in the Underdark?
The Underdark was divided into several domains that were similar to continents of the world above. While it was possible to travel from one place to another within a domain, separate domains tended to have very few passages linking them.
How far below the surface does upperdark start?
Their Upperdark page says that it is a realm 3 miles below the surface – implying it starts 3 miles down.
