What is an arcane focus?
An arcane focus is a special item – an orb, a crystal, a rod, a specially constructed staff, a wand like length of wood, or some similar item – designed to channel the power of arcane spells. While not quite similar to most foci, the quarterstaff and the warhammer are both categorized as Versatile Melee Weapons.

Can bards and artificers use arcane focus?
But for some (insane!) reason, the rules technically do not allow bards, artificers, arcane tricksters, and eldritch knights to use an arcane focus. Can a mundane focus be used as a weapon?
Some focii can be used as weapons and some focii are magical themselves – a magic staff or wand can be used as an arcane focus. But yes, a mundane focus is a re-flavored mundane component pouch. On page 203 of PHB, it is very vague, it can support both sides of the argument.
