How do you open the parachute in Kerbal Space Program?

Parachute will not open because you dont loose enough speed before impacting. chute won’t open above 280m/s.

How do you activate the parachute in rocket ships?
You press the spacebar during flight to move upwards through the staging list (shown on the left during flight) starting from the bottom activating each stage as you fly. Your parachute should be the last stage you have on any rocket so should be right at the top of the list.
