Is droes ook besmettelijk voor honden?
Een belangrijk verschil tussen kwade droes en gewone droes is dat kwade droes ook besmet- telijk is voor andere diersoorten, zoals alle kat- achtigen, honden, kamelen, beren, herkauwers en ook mensen. De ziekte is dus een zoönose. Goedaardige droes is geen zoönose: mensen kunnen geen gewone droes krijgen.
Hoe lang duurt droes?
Vaak geneest droes binnen ca. 7-14 dagen uit zichzelf; de ontsteking breekt dan door naar de keel of naar buiten. Er ontstaan rond het keelgebied abcessen met pus. Je kunt het doorbreken van de abcessen stimuleren door ze kaal te scheren en regelmatig in te smeren met trekzalf.
Hoe besmettelijk is droes bij paarden?
De Streptococcus equi bacterie is in grote hoeveelheden aanwezig in de neusuitvloeiing en de pus van besmette paarden. Dit is dus zeer besmettelijk. Paarden met droes moeten dan ook geïsoleerd worden van andere paarden. De bacterie komt het lichaam van het paard binnen via de neus of de mond.
