Waar komen stratovulkanen voor?
Stratovulkanen worden meestal gevormd boven subductiezones, als ketens of bogen langs de randen van tektonische platen waar oceanische korst onder continentale korst duikt. Ook waar de ene oceanische plaat onder de andere duikt, worden stratovulkanen gevormd.

De Cocosplaat is een tektonische plaat die zich bevindt ten westen van Midden-Amerika in de Grote Oceaan.
Waar komt een Calderavulkaan voor?
Een caldeira (Portugees) of caldera (Spaans) is een grote komvormige krater, gevormd door vulkanische activiteit. Als de spanning in de vulkaan opnieuw stijgt kan deze op twee manieren tot uitbarsting komen: er vormt zich een nieuwe vulkaan boven op de caldeira, bijvoorbeeld Vesuvius bij de Campi Fleigrei.
What is El Chichón volcano?
El Chichón was by no means a remarkable-looking volcano prior to 1982 (see right) — it is merely a complex of domes with a tuff ring made of ejected volcanic material. It sits between two volcanic arcs — the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt and the Guatemalan Belt — and in a region with few active volcanoes.
What is happening at El Chichón?
The rapid escalation of activity at El Chichón is very similar to what happened at Chaitén in Chile during its 2008 eruption — the time between the first signs of an impending major eruption from a volcano thought to be “dormant” and the explosion itself was very short.
What set El Chichon apart from other mountains?
The region was heavily forested, and in the series of peaks there seemed little that set El Chichon apart. At 800 meters above the surrounding country side, the 1260-meter high peak was less tall than some other peaks in the area. And in any case, there was little evidence for any volcanic activity.
What is the oldest structure in El Chichon?
The oldest structure is a crater situated 4 kilometer to the northwest, which is dated to 1.64 million years ago. A dike extended 14 kilometer southwest, following a fault line: this happened 1.1 million years ago. El Chichon itself began to develop at its current location some 370 thousand years ago.
